Under the general supervision of the Director of Admissions and daily oversight by the Associate Director of Admissions & Recruitment, the Admissions Counselor will represent CSUMB by making presentations at on-campus and off-campus functions and represent the university at college fairs.
With close supervision primary duties will consist of providing and detailed information to potential high school and community college students; making determinations regarding eligibility for admissions based on knowledge and experience of records, transcripts, and official documents in making evaluations against the appropriate criterion; recommends educational goals and admissions requirements to potential students.
In addition to general recruitment, the Admissions Counselor will also attend recruitment events dedicated to the recruitment of African American students.
Duties below are performed under immediate supervision with more problematic transactions being completed on the basis of explicit instructions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following: PURPOSE: Speaks publicly and/or staffs information table at education fairs, informational sessions, student service fairs, and other related activities.
Represents the University at statewide College Fairs.
Represents the University at the CSU Statewide Counselor's Conferences.
Maintains CSUMB presence in the community colleges and high schools with emphasis on the local Tri-County area.
Working closely with the Associate Director will participate in diverse recruiting/outreach events, programs, and campus tours, as well as website, marketing materials, and messaging.
Represents the university at various local and national outreach/recruiting events; coordinates the annual calling campaigns for admitted students and families from diverse backgrounds.
Dedicate specific recruitment to the African American student population and community.
Ensures timely communication to applicants throughout the admissions cycle; assists in the development of targeted messages to prospective students, serves on diverse recruiting/retention committees and on Admissions hiring committees.
Trains to review academic credentials to determine admissions eligibility for resident and non-resident applicants, prepare summary of transfer credits and apply those credits to graduation requirements.
Interprets and explains policies to staff members and provides clarification on policies and procedures to other CSUMB offices and representatives from other colleges and institutions.
Assists with planning, coordination and conducting outreach programs that will showcase CSUMB and increase full-time enrollment goals.
Develops and participates in email, chat, social networking, and tele-counseling campaigns to follow-up with students.
Assists with coordination and conducts workshops on Admissions, EOP, Residential Housing, Financial Aid information, and other important student-related programs.
Provides oral presentations to schools, communities, employers, and parents scheduling and managing Admission Counseling appointments.
Maintains a prospect list and prepares reports reflecting recruitment efforts including vital statistical information.
Utilizes territory reports to determine events to attend and applies the best-practices methodology for timely follow-up with prospective students.
Trains with senior counselor in providing personal pre-admissions counseling on a walk-in or appointment basis.
Maintains and coordinates electronic messaging and communications for the Office of Admissions.
Other Functions: May include widespread traveling; in particular, during peak recruitment seasons.
Adjustment of schedules to meet admissions file evaluation goals and deadlines, particularly during peak admissions processing season.
Assists in coordinating programs with other campus departments.
Provides work direction for student assistants when needed.
Performs other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Working knowledge of: the principles of individual and group behavior; research and observation techniques for the purpose of recording, classifying, and interpreting factual information; the techniques and methods of interviewing; and the basic principles, practices and major trends in the related field.
Ability to: gather and analyze data; reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations; participate in and contribute to group meetings, conferences and interviews; clearly express ideas and recommendations orally; write clear and concise reports; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, faculty and other private and public agencies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of one year of experience in professional Student Services work at the entry trainee level.
Equivalent amounts of graduate level job-related education may be substituted for the required experience.
Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field.
Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Working knowledge of recruitment, admission, enrollment, retention, graduation, and other student and administrative services that support and enhance student learning.
Excellent customer service, information literacy, and critical thinking skills.
Exceptional ability to communicate verbally and in writing in a professional, persuasive, and tactful manner.
