Department of Defense (DOD) Reference Code NPS-2024-0002 How to Apply Description The Energy Academic Group (EAG) provides energy-focused graduate education, research, and outreach through an interdisciplinary group of faculty members.
Its efforts focus on solving the Navy, Marine Corps, and Department of Defense’s (DOD) most critical energy problems through graduate education and research.
The EAG Climate Security Pillar supports the Navy’s needs in environmental and climate security issues, including policy and law research related to Autonomous Systems (AS).
What will I be doing? Under the guidance of a mentor, you will support the EAG staff in research related to climate security, specifically research and analysis related to AS and Uncrewed/Unmanned Systems (UxS) operating in the Polar Regions.
Your research will seek to answer policy and legal questions related to military use and operations of AS in the Arctic.
You will identify gaps and opportunities for advancing U.
S.
policy related to these systems.
This may include recommendations for legal and policy language that addresses gaps, conflicts, or new requirements related to AS including recommendations for international treaties, marine and maritime policy, as well as other governance structures.
Should time and interest permit, you may also conduct research on analyzing the role of UxS and AS in climate challenges including their role in replacing higher-emission platforms and the collection of environmental data relevant to climate change and its impacts.
You will attend weekly meetings with project lead and/or EAG team and submit written analyses as needed.
You will produce a report on analysis and findings and submit an article to the EAG newsletter, Surge.
You may be asked to give a final presentation to EAG.

Where will I be located? Monterey, California While the ideal candidate will be located in Monterey, California within commuting distance to the Naval Postgraduate School, candidates working remotely with reliable internet and computer access will also be considered.
What is the anticipated start date? 6/3/2024 Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate.
Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
What is the appointment length? You will be expected to participate 35 hours a week.
An ORISE appointment period can be a short-term (less than 2 weeks), summer (10-12 weeks), or yearlong appointment.
Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
What are the benefits? You will receive a stipend to be determined by NPS.
Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location.

About ORISE This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.

Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD.
Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency.
Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program.
Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

Qualifications This opportunity with the Energy Academic Group at the Naval Post Graduate School is open to all students and recent graduates who meet the following qualifications: U.
S Citizens only Individuals 18 years of age or older at time of application Will have a High School Diploma/GED, Associate's Degree, Bachelor's Degree, or Master's degree obtained within 3 months of the desired start date or will have completed by 5/31/2024.
U.
S.
military veterans who have been honorably discharged (or who have been medically discharged because of a service-connected disability) and who received their degree within ten years of the desired start date are also eligible.
Highly competitive candidates will have strong research and writing skills, relevant coursework and will have demonstrated commitment to and interest in UxS, marine policy and/or law.
