Overview
The City of Pacific Grove is now accepting applications for regular, part-time cashier, up to 20 hours a week.
The ideal candidate will have excellent customer service and experience with cash handling process and procedures.
Duties include collecting entry fees to the Historical Point Pinos Lighthouse, selling merchandise in the Lighthouse Gift Shop as well as interacting and providing excellent customer service to visitors from all around the world.
Current working days/hours are: Monday, 1- 3pm Friday, 1- 3 pm Thursday, 1-3 pm Saturday, 11 - 3 pm Sunday, 11 - 3 pm Hours and days may be extended in the future based on operational needs.
Classification Description SUMMARY: Under general supervision, cashiers and provides courteous and effective customer service to visitors at the Pacific Grove Lighthouse and/or Stillwell Children's Pool at Lover's Point Park.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: Greets guests and provides prompt, courteous, and friendly customer services; responds to requests for information, and explains rules, policies, and procedures; Performs specialized cashier functions, ensures cashier desk is not left unattended, collects fees, sells and collects for merchandise or services, issues necessary receipts for payments; Monitors inventory, may assist in ordering inventory and merchandising products; Balances daily receipts to monies received and prepares revenue summary sheets; Operates modern office machines and equipment; Maintains facility cleanliness, and opens/closes facility as needed; Supports the relationship between the City of Pacific Grove and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
Typical Qualifications Education, Training and Experience Guidelines: High School Diploma or GED equivalent; AND one year of customer service or retail experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Knowledge of: City policies and procedures; Basic arithmetic in order to make change; account for monies checks or negotiable items; prepare summaries; Money handling techniques such as reconciliation of cash; Modern technology devices; computer hardware and software; Clerical and financial recordkeeping procedures.
Skill in: Operating a cash register and make necessary cash transactions with speed and accuracy; Receiving and accounting for cash and other negotiable items; Keeping accurate records of payments received; Following verbal and written instructions and safe work practices; Monitoring operations and notifying supervisor of safety issues; Dealing tactfully and courteously with the public; Communicating effectively verbally and in writing; Basic organizational and cleaning skills.
Supplemental Information Conditions of Employment Required to take an Oath of Office City employees are disaster relief workers in the event of natural disasters or emergency conditions.
As part of the selection process, all individuals provided with a conditional offer of employment will be subject to a background investigation, including a criminal history check (primarily completed through the taking of fingerprints).
An image of your fingerprints will be captured and sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
The resulting report of your conviction history, (if any), will be evaluated along with the other information received in connection with your application.
Except as otherwise required by law, a criminal conviction will not necessarily disqualify you from the position.
The nature of the offense, the date of the offense, the surrounding circumstances, and the relevance of the offense to the position applied for may, however, be considered.
Must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 or submit to weekly testing.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: A valid California State Driver's License may be required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in a standard office environment.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS The City of Pacific Grove does not participate in Social Security.
An employee in this part-time classification will contribute up to 7.
50% of his/her pay into a 457 deferred compensation plan.
The duration of the eligibility list is 14 months unless abolished by Human Resources.
